shanel & xavier
A lantern on a river in Vietnam, an island girl, and a seaside wedding.
Shanel grew up in the water. When she and her sister Melis were little, they went to bed in their swimwear so they wouldn’t lose a minute in the morning. Whatever else happened, the sea was always part of it.
Xavier doesn’t need much. A slow Sunday, Nova (their husky), a board game Shanel is about to lose. Shanel is the one with the lists: a third degree, solo trips through Central Asia, the next thing and then the one after. Ten years in, she says he taught her to stop and notice what she already has. He says she makes him want to be better at everything. Asked separately to describe each other, they both picked the word childish :)
They met at Essex University. She was nineteen. He was twenty and coming out of the “library” when he saw a head of curly hair and decided he had to say hello. He tried Greek. She was Turkish Cypriot. It went fine anyway.
At some point she told him that love, to her, looked like the lantern scene in Tangled. He held on to that. When he finally proposed, it was on a river in Hoi An during the lantern festival. Before that came a day of rain, a cooking class that flooded, and a boatman who gave up on them after five minutes. The second boatman didn’t. The lanterns went onto the water and they both cried.
So when they came back to Cyprus to get married, it was always going to be by the sea.
June in Paphos is not gentle. By the time I joined them for their couple session, the heat was in everything. They didn’t care. They laughed the whole way through.
The ceremony was at Ktima Alassos in Lempa, on the coast near Coral Bay. Piano, the people who matter most to them, and the sea behind. Xavier opened his vows by calling her an island girl, then pointed out that the UK is technically an island too. It got a laugh. Shanel’s vows were quieter. She didn’t grow up in the warmest home, and she spoke honestly about learning to look after herself early, and about what it meant to be loved the way Xavier loves her. I’ll leave the rest to the film. As they turned to walk back up the aisle, smoke fireworks went up around them.
After that, the day loosened. They decorated a pavlova together at cocktail hour. They danced to Risk It All. Melis (Shanel’s sister) told a story about a Cornetto, and the last bite Shanel always saved for her, and you could see how long those two have been looking after each other. Xavier’s dad spoke about the spark she brings into their family. Then the music got louder, and late in the night, the sky over the water lit up with the fireworks they’d kept secret from everyone.
I filmed Shanel and Xavier’s wedding in June at Ktima Alassos, Paphos. Most of the film is in their own voices. They had been telling this story for ten years. I just had to listen.
